Tschierva Hut, Mountain hut in Grisons, Switzerland
Tschierva Hut is a mountain refuge located at 2583 meters near the Tschierva Glacier, serving as base shelter for climbers. It has simple sleeping rooms, a dining area, and sits directly below the peaks that mountaineers use as starting points for their routes.
The hut was built in 1899 at the base of Piz Bernina and received major infrastructure improvements in 1951 to handle rising visitor numbers. These upgrades allowed the refuge to adapt to the increasing demand from mountaineers.
The hut is run by the Swiss Alpine Club and represents a traditional mountain culture where guests share meals and stories in a simple, communal setting. Local dishes served in the kitchen connect visitors to the food traditions of the Alpine region.
Visitors need to bring their own silk or cotton sleeping bags and should announce their arrival in advance, as the hut operates by reservation. Dinner is served at 18:30 and breakfast between 7:00 and 8:00, so plan your schedule around these meal times.
The hut serves as the starting point for the Biancograt route, which leads directly to the north ridge of Piz Bernina and is counted among the classic high mountain tours in the Alps. This route combines technical difficulty with views of glaciers and rock edges.
