Oberaletsch mountain hut, Mountain shelter in Valais, Switzerland.
The Oberaletsch mountain hut is a shelter in Valais located at 2,640 meters elevation on a spur above the convergence of two major glaciers in the Bernese Alps. The facility holds around 70 sleeping places split between a modern building and an older structure, with staff who speak multiple languages.
The hut was founded in 1890 with 14 sleeping places and expanded in 1928 with an additional building. After a fire destroyed it in 1971, it was rebuilt in 1972 and has since served mountaineers and hikers.
The hut belongs to the Swiss Alpine Club section Chasseral and sits within the UNESCO World Heritage site Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn, an area valued by mountaineers and hikers for its glaciers and high alpine landscape. It serves as a gathering point for people traveling through this remote region.
Reaching the hut requires several hours of hiking through alpine terrain, typically needing a good level of fitness. Visitors should be ready for quickly changing weather and steep climbs, especially in the shoulder seasons.
After an avalanche destroyed a nearby bivouac shelter in 2019, this hut became the primary access point for climbers heading toward the Aletschhorn summit. This shift has increased its importance as a staging area for mountaineers in the region.
