Oppidum Üetliberg, Iron Age fortification on Uetliberg mountain, Switzerland
Oppidum Üetliberg is an Iron Age fortified settlement perched on a mountain near Zürich in Switzerland. The site features defensive earth walls that once encircled the elevated terrain to protect inhabitants from intruders.
The fortified settlement was established during the La Tène period around 500 BC and was eventually abandoned following Roman expansion in the first century BC.
Archaeological excavations revealed a rich female burial site called Fürstengrab Sonnenbühl, containing artifacts from the fifth century BC.
The site is easily accessible from the surrounding area and the remains of the ancient defensive structures are visible above ground. Sturdy footwear is recommended for exploring the uneven terrain and getting close to the wall foundations.
The site contains evidence of continuous human settlement from 4000 BC through the Neolithic period to the early Middle Ages.
