Lac du Vernex, Reservoir in Rossinière, Switzerland
Lac du Vernex is a mountain reservoir sitting at 859 meters elevation between the peaks of Pointe de Cray and Planachaux. The water spreads across roughly 32 hectares and collects flow from the surrounding alpine terrain.
The lake was created as an artificial reservoir to store water for irrigation and power generation in the valley below. This water management project supported the growth of agriculture and settlements in the mountain region.
The reservoir sits within a mountain landscape where local communities have long depended on the water and surrounding pastures for their livelihood. The area today reflects how people in alpine regions shape their lives around these natural resources and the seasons.
You can reach the water from Rossinière on marked walking paths that are easy to follow from the village. Parking and information signs are located near the shore, making orientation straightforward for most visitors.
The reservoir gathers water from a catchment area covering roughly 398 square kilometers fed by countless mountain streams. This web of sources gives the lake a steady water supply throughout the year regardless of seasons.
