Rochers de Naye, Limestone summit in Vaud canton, Switzerland.
Rochers de Naye is a limestone summit in the canton of Vaud, located above Montreux at an elevation of just over 2,000 meters. The top sits above the tree line, with open rocky ground and a clear view in multiple directions.
A cogwheel railway from Montreux reached the summit in the late 19th century, opening the peak to a wider public for the first time. Before that, only experienced climbers and shepherds would have made the journey up to these heights.
The name Rochers de Naye simply means the rocks of Naye, referring to the bare limestone outcrops that define the top of the peak. On clear days, visitors gather near the summit to look out over Lake Geneva and the lines of mountains stretching toward France and the Alps.
The summit can be reached by cogwheel train from Montreux or on foot via marked trails from Col de Jaman. Walking to the top requires sturdy footwear, as the ground near the peak is rocky and uneven in places.
The summit hosts enclosures where marmot species from several different mountain regions of the world live side by side. This makes it one of the few places where visitors can observe and compare different marmot species in one spot.
