Dent du Lan, Mountain summit in Valais and Haute-Savoie, Switzerland and France
Dent du Lan is a mountain summit straddling the border between Switzerland and France, built from sedimentary rock layers. The peak rises to about 2087 meters and overlooks the surrounding valleys where hikers from nearby villages arrive from different directions.
The mountain forms part of the Préalpes médianes nappe, a geological structure shaped by ancient tectonic movements that built the Alps over millions of years. Its sedimentary layers preserve evidence of past marine environments that were uplifted into this high elevation landscape.
Located within the Chablais Geopark, the Dent du Vélan serves as an educational site for understanding the geological formations of the Western Alps.
Trails ascending the peak can be accessed from several nearby villages that offer different starting points and route options. The best hiking season runs from early summer through early autumn when snow is not blocking the mountain paths.
The Dent du Vélan marks the westernmost point above 2000 meters in Switzerland, creating a natural border between two distinct Alpine regions.
