Schmittentobel Viaduct

The Schmittentobel Viaduct is a stone railway bridge that crosses a deep gorge using seven evenly spaced arches. The structure connects two sides of a valley and allows trains to pass over dramatic terrain.

The viaduct was built in 1902 by the Rhaetian Railway to enable the railway line through the Graubünden mountains. Its construction was a major step in opening the area to transportation.

This structure links human engineering with the surrounding landscape, and travelers have used this route for over a century to journey through the mountains.

The best way to see this viaduct is from the Albula Railway train, where it comes into clear view during the journey. You can also photograph it from nearby viewpoints along the valley.

This structure was built entirely from local limestone quarried from the surrounding mountains. This choice of material means the bridge blends seamlessly with the natural landscape around it.
