Zanzan Region, Former administrative region in northeastern Ivory Coast.
Zanzan is a former administrative region in northeastern Ivory Coast comprising seven departments including Bondoukou, Bouna, Koun-Fao, Nassian, Sandégué, Tanda, and Transua. The territory spreads across a large area in tropical setting where farming and local commerce intertwine.
The area was established in 1997 as an administrative subdivision with Bondoukou serving as its capital and functioned as an organized zone for over a decade. Dissolution came in 2011 when the country reorganized its administrative structure and created new district boundaries.
Multiple ethnic groups inhabit the area and maintain traditional farming practices alongside local trade networks. Their way of life has shaped the daily rhythms and commerce visible in villages and markets today.
Access to various departments is easiest through key towns like Bondoukou, which serve as transportation hubs for the region. The best time to visit is during the dry season when roads are passable and trading markets operate in full swing.
The area transformed into Zanzan District during a comprehensive administrative overhaul while preserving the original geographical boundaries. This continuity in borders while restructuring governance shows how administrative systems can evolve without reshaping the physical territory.
