Limbe, Coastal city in Southwest Region, Cameroon
Limbe is a port city on the southwestern coast of Cameroon, stretching along black sand beaches at the base of Mount Cameroon. The city is home to a botanical garden covering extensive grounds with tropical plant collections and walking paths.
British missionaries founded the settlement in the mid-19th century and named it Victoria. The city adopted its current name, Limbe, in 1982, marking an important shift in local identity.
The annual Limbe Festival of Arts brings together musicians, dancers, and craftspeople who display regional performances and local creations. The city itself thrives on this creative energy, visible in its streets and markets throughout the year.
The city has functional ports and waterfront areas that make getting around straightforward, with multiple access points to the beach. Visitors should know the tropical climate brings regular rainfall, so the drier months offer more comfortable conditions for exploration.
A wildlife center in the city cares for different primate species, including gorillas and chimpanzees rescued from the surrounding area. This work makes the place an important point for protecting endangered animals in the region.
