Dschang, city
Dschang is a city in the Menoua region of Cameroon, situated in the mountains at about 1,400 meters (4,600 feet) elevation. Green hills and forests surround it, while modern buildings stand alongside traditional houses built with local materials.
The city was founded in 1895 by a German military mission, and its name means 'land of idle talk' in the local language. After World War I, control passed to France, which developed it as an administrative and educational center for the region.
The city has long been a hub for crafts and trade, visible in daily market life. Traditional masks and handmade goods made by skilled artisans reflect local beliefs and the knowledge passed down through generations.
The city has year-round roads connecting buses to nearby cities like Bafoussam and Yaoundé, and a small airstrip enables quick arrival. The higher elevation means the air stays cool and fresh throughout most of the year.
A university established in 1993 draws students from across the country and brings youthful energy to the city. The Museum of Cameroon Civilizations, founded in partnership with the French city of Nantes, tells stories about slavery, colonization, and local traditions.
