Lo Wu station, Transportation hub in North District, Hong Kong
Lo Wu is a surface metro station in the North District featuring three tracks with two side platforms and an island platform. It serves as the northern terminus of the East Rail line and connects directly to Shenzhen on mainland China.
The station began operations on October 14, 1949, initially without border controls in place. Following the establishment of the People's Republic of China, immigration procedures were introduced to regulate cross-border movement.
The station serves as a vital crossing point between Hong Kong and mainland China, handling the daily movement of thousands of travelers through its checkpoints. It shapes the routine of commuters and visitors who regularly move between the two regions.
Travelers must complete immigration clearance at Lo Wu Control Point before entering mainland China. Specific exits are designated for Lo Wu residents, which may affect which routes you take depending on your status.
The station was closed to regular service from February 2020 to February 2023, operating only for Lo Wu residents during COVID-19 restrictions. This unusual operational pause was unique in Hong Kong metro history.
