Baoshan, prefecture-level city in Yunnan, China
Baoshan is a major city in western Yunnan with a population exceeding 2.6 million spread across multiple districts and counties. The city borders Myanmar and sits on natural resources including hot springs, jade deposits, amber, and distinctive stones that have shaped its economy and character for centuries.
The city was originally known as Yongchang and ranks among the earliest human settlements in western Yunnan. It passed through different eras under various kingdoms including the Ailao Kingdom, then the Nanzhao and Dali states, each leaving traces in the landscape and remaining structures.
Baoshan served as a major waypoint on the historic Silk Road, and this heritage remains central to the city's identity and local pride. You can see this connection reflected in the markets where artisans sell carved jade, woven rattan crafts, and handmade paper umbrellas that carry forward generations of skill.
Two airports serve the city: Baoshan Airport sits close to the city center with flights to major destinations like Beijing and Kunming, while Tengchong Airport lies about 10 kilometers away. Buses connect Baoshan with nearby areas including Tengchong County, offering an easy way to explore different parts of the region.
The Tengchong Hot Sea is a group of geothermal springs located about 20 kilometers from Tengchong County where numerous springs bubble naturally from the earth and some reach temperatures above 90 degrees Celsius. Nearby, the Tengchong Volcano Park displays a landscape shaped by past volcanic activity, letting visitors grasp the forces that molded this terrain.
