Beijingnan railway station, railway station in Beijing, China
Beijingnan Railway Station is a surface railway station in the southern part of Beijing, sitting on the border of Fengtai and Dongcheng Districts, with more than 20 platform tracks. The building covers a wide area and houses waiting halls, shops, and ticketing machines across several levels.
The current station was built in the 2000s as a major upgrade to an older station that had stood on this site since the early 20th century. The rebuild was timed to coincide with the opening of the high-speed rail line to Tianjin in 2008.
The station is the main departure point for high-speed trains heading south, especially to Shanghai and Tianjin. Many travelers use it daily for commuting between cities, which gives the place a very workday feel rather than a tourist one.
The station is served by several metro lines, and signs throughout the building are in both Chinese and English. Allow extra time before departure for the security checks that all passengers must pass through at the entrance.
Near the station stands a museum dedicated to the engineer Zhan Tianyou, who led the construction of the first railway built by Chinese workers in the late 19th century. The line he built passed through this same part of Beijing, which gives the area an unexpected connection to the very start of Chinese rail history.
