Holy Saviour's Cathedral
Holy Saviour's Cathedral, Anglican cathedral in Xicheng District, Beijing, China.
Holy Saviour's Cathedral is an Anglican church in Beijing featuring a cruciform layout with a north-south basilica axis, using grey bricks combined with traditional Chinese roof tiles. The building serves as a bookstore branch today after undergoing major restoration work.
The cathedral was completed in 1907 and served as the center of the Anglican community in North China until services ended in 1949. After that, the building transitioned to different uses and eventually underwent major restoration.
The cathedral blends European architectural styles with Chinese design elements, showing how Western and Eastern religious traditions met in Beijing. Visitors can see this fusion in the building's details and the way it sits within the city's landscape.
The building is accessible to the public today as a bookstore, making it easy to explore the interior and its design. It is advisable to check the store hours before visiting to plan your trip accordingly.
The building was designated as a Cultural Protection Site by Beijing authorities in 2003, making it the oldest Anglican church in Northern China. This recognition ensured its preservation for future generations.
