Juyongguan is a mountain pass that runs through a steep valley, creating a corridor between the northern regions and Beijing. The passage spans approximately 18 kilometers through the mountains and contains the notable Cloud Platform with its carved stone structures.
During the Ming Dynasty, this pass was one of the Three Inner Passes that controlled movement between Mongolia and the North China Plain. This strategic position made it vital for managing trade and military movement between the northern and southern regions.
The Cloud Platform displays stone carvings with religious texts in six languages, reflecting how different groups interacted along this passage during medieval times. These inscriptions show the diverse peoples who traveled through and used this route.
You can reach the pass by taking a direct bus from Beijing's Deshengmen Station, with the trip taking about one hour. Wear comfortable shoes and prepare for hilly terrain, as the journey takes you through steep valleys and mountain paths.
The white marble archway of the Cloud Platform contains detailed carvings of animals and Buddhist figures created in 1342. These ornate details built directly into the gate structure are easily overlooked by visitors passing through quickly.
