Xuanhan County, county in Dazhou, Sichuan, China
Description
Xuanhan County is a county in Sichuan Province characterized by rolling hills, forests, and wide rivers that wind through the landscape. The terrain features mountains and natural slopes, with the main town of Xuanhan nestled in a valley near the Zhouhe River, surrounded by high hills on all sides.
History
Xuanhan County was originally called Dongxiang County, a name dating from 96 AD during the Han Dynasty, which changed to Xuanhan after the republic was established in 1914. Throughout centuries of shifting rulers and governance, the area remained a quiet place primarily known for farming and local trade.
Culture
Xuanhan County's culture is shaped by the Tujia minority group, who wear traditional clothing and celebrate their own festivals throughout the year. During harvest celebrations and local gatherings, visitors see colorful costumes, hear drums in the villages, and share special dishes that families have prepared for generations.
Practical
Explore Xuanhan by traveling on the winding rural roads that pass through the mountains, stopping at small villages and local markets to experience daily life. Wear sturdy shoes since paths are uneven, and be prepared for four distinct seasons that bring different conditions to the region throughout the year.
Did you know?
A planned high-speed railway station will soon connect Xuanhan to major cities like Chongqing and Xi'an, bringing modern transport to a region that has long been isolated. This infrastructure development will preserve the rare mix of rural life and improved access while maintaining the area's quiet character.
