Shangshan

Shangshan is an archaeological site in Zhejiang Province containing stone tools, pottery, and plant remains from early human settlement. Excavations across 19 separate locations have uncovered evidence of occupation and agricultural development during the early period of human habitation.

Systematic investigation since 2000 has revealed settlement and agricultural practices spanning roughly 11,000 years of human history. The evidence suggests this location emerged as a major center for early farming development.

The site reveals how early inhabitants grew and processed rice, a practice that shaped communities across East Asia for thousands of years. Visitors can observe how these ancient farming methods influenced the development of settled societies in the region.

The site is outdoors with exhibits displaying discoveries from the excavations. Wear comfortable shoes and check weather conditions beforehand, as the terrain can become muddy after rain.
