Jiangkou Reservoir, body of water
Jiangkou Reservoir is a large artificial lake in Wulong District, Chongqing, held back by a curved concrete arch dam that stands 139 meters tall. The water stretches across a narrow valley surrounded by steep limestone cliffs and rocky terrain, fed by the Furong River.
Construction of the reservoir began in the late 1990s and was completed in the early 2000s. The project required extensive drilling and reinforcement work in the limestone terrain to ensure a stable and long-lasting structure.
The reservoir sits within a landscape where water management has shaped how people live and work. Visitors can observe how the community relies on this waterway for daily needs and how the dramatic geology influences the character of the area.
Access to the reservoir is easiest from nearby Jiangkou Town, where visitors can find viewing points and walking paths along the shoreline. The best time to visit is during drier seasons when trails are well-maintained and the water remains calm.
The power station sits entirely underground, keeping turbine noise and vibrations hidden beneath the surface. This hidden infrastructure allows the surrounding landscape to remain relatively uninterrupted while minimizing visual impact on the scenic environment.
