Dongqian Lake, Lake in Ningbo, China
Dongqian Lake is a large freshwater lake in Yinzhou District, Ningbo, China. It covers about 20 square kilometers (7.7 square miles) and is surrounded by hills, villages, and tea fields, with a shoreline of roughly 45 kilometers (28 miles).
The lake formed as a lagoon and was first recorded in the Western Jin dynasty. During the Tang and Song dynasties, it was expanded and managed for irrigation, and in recent decades it has been developed for tourism and recreation.
The lake is known for its connection to Song dynasty culture, with a cultural corridor that includes the Hanling Song Street and the Southern Song Stone Carvings Park. Visitors can join themed tours that focus on tea, history, and local crafts.
The lake is easy to reach from central Ningbo, and a ring road and bike paths make it simple to explore at your own pace. Mornings and late afternoons are cooler and less crowded, especially on weekends.
The lake is home to a small island called Tao Gong Island, where legend says the ancient official Fan Li and his companion Xi Shi retired. Today, it is a popular spot for barbecues and picnics.
