Dongshan District, Guangzhou, Former administrative district in Guangzhou, China
Dongshan District was a central administrative area in Guangzhou positioned between Tianhe District to the east and present-day Yuexiu District to the west. The area contained many schools, residential neighborhoods, and buildings that reflected different periods of the city's development.
The district was established in 1960 as a separate administrative zone during a period of city reorganization. In 2005 it merged with Yuexiu District, ending its independent status as a distinct administrative unit.
The area developed a character shaped by missionary activities, with churches, schools, and hospitals that introduced Western architectural styles in the early 20th century. This fusion of foreign and local influences created a distinct identity that residents and visitors could observe in the built environment.
The former district area can be explored by walking through the neighborhoods and streets that once defined its boundaries, now part of Yuexiu District. Visitors can observe the residential areas and historic structures that remain from different periods of its past.
The phrase 'Dongshan gentlemen' was a local expression used to describe residents known for their modern outlook and worldly perspective. This term reflected how the area was seen as a hub for educated and culturally engaged inhabitants.
