新河浦, Historical residential district in Eastern Guangzhou, China.
Xinhepu is a historic residential neighborhood in Guangzhou featuring around 500 buildings with red brick walls and Western classical designs. The structures date from the Republican period and display stone finishes and garden spaces throughout the area.
The neighborhood was planned as a Western residential area in the 1920s and quickly became a center for political and social change. Several buildings within it hosted important national political gatherings during this transformative period.
The neighborhood blends Chinese and Western influences in its layout and building names. Many structures carry Chinese names while displaying European architectural features that reflect the area's role as a space where different cultures met.
The neighborhood is best explored on foot since the streets are narrow and buildings sit close together. Wear comfortable shoes and allow several hours to walk through the area slowly and observe the architectural details.
The neighborhood remained relatively unknown compared to other historic areas of the city despite housing one of China's largest collections of European architecture. This understated presence means many visitors feel they have discovered something overlooked by others.
