Guangzhou Bridge, Steel bridge in Guangzhou, China.
The Guangzhou Bridge is a steel structure spanning the Pearl River and carrying Guangzhou Avenue across the waterway, also passing over the eastern portion of Ersha Island. The crossing measures approximately 1,240 meters and accommodates both vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
Completed in 1985, this structure became the third bridge to cross the Pearl River in Guangzhou at a time of rapid urban expansion. Its construction reflected the city's growth and the pressing need to improve transportation between developing districts.
The crossing links residential areas on one side with the modern business district on the other, where cultural venues like the opera house attract residents and visitors. Daily foot traffic across this bridge connects these two different parts of the city.
Both cars and pedestrians can use this crossing, though the roadway carries significant traffic during peak hours. Visitors should expect busy conditions when traveling between the residential and business districts, particularly in early morning and late afternoon.
The structure underwent significant reinforcement work to improve safety for river traffic, with collision prevention barriers added at four support pillars beneath the span. These upgrades made the crossing safer for both ships navigating below and the people who depend on it daily.
