Blue House, Preserved building in Wan Chai District, Hong Kong
Blue House is a four-story residential building in Wan Chai District, Hong Kong, marked by its blue exterior walls, wooden staircases, French doors, and shallow balconies. Inside, patterned floor tiles and original architectural details preserve the character of early 20th-century construction.
Wah To Hospital stood on this site from the 1870s until it was demolished. The present building was erected in 1922 as a residential block with shops on the ground floor, built using mixed timber and brick construction methods.
The building now serves as a living museum where visitors can walk through restored apartments and see how families arranged their daily lives in tight spaces. Displays show furniture, kitchen tools, and personal objects that reflect ordinary routines from past decades.
The building holds 20 apartments that now open for exhibitions and visits. When entering the rooms, walk quietly and mind that the wooden stairs are steep and narrow.
The blue color appeared in 1990 almost by chance when workers used surplus paint from the Water Supplies Department to coat the walls. This makeshift solution later became the building's signature feature and gave it its current name.
