Tai Koo Shing Ferry Pier, former pier in Hong Kong
Tai Koo Shing Ferry Pier was a small terminal in Quarry Bay built from basic concrete and wooden materials. The structure provided a straightforward point where passengers could board and disembark from boats serving the harbor route.
The pier opened in 1980 to ease traffic congestion on nearby roads and operated ferry services to Central and Kowloon City. It closed in 1983 when a larger replacement pier opened in Sai Wan Ho, which could handle greater passenger volumes.
The location sat near residential buildings like Poyang Mansion and Tsui Woo Terrace, making it convenient for nearby residents to access. The site itself is no longer active, so visiting requires awareness that only the historical spot remains.
The pier was a quick-build solution to traffic problems in the early 1980s and shows how Hong Kong adapted to changing transportation needs. Ferry routes were especially busy on weekends when residents used the water crossings for outings or errands.
