Tai Hang Sai Estate, Private rental housing estate in Sham Shui Po District, Hong Kong
Tai Hang Sai Estate is a private rental housing complex in Sham Shui Po District with eight residential buildings housing over 1,600 units. It sits near the MTR Shek Kip Mei station and occupies land positioned between two other housing estates in the neighborhood.
The British colonial government granted land to Hong Kong Settlers Housing Corporation in 1961 to house residents who had been displaced from a nearby resettlement area. This action reflected the urgent need to rehouse people during that period of urban change.
The estate emerged from a government decision to partner with a private corporation for rental housing, a different approach than the public housing complexes that dominate the district. This arrangement shaped how the community developed and accessed homes in a tightly packed urban area.
The complex has convenient access to public transportation via the nearby MTR station and is surrounded by local shops and services. The area is densely packed, so expect it to be crowded during peak hours.
A major redevelopment project starting in 2021 will triple the estate and create about 3,300 new units. Current tenants will have 1,300 units reserved for them, while 2,000 units will be sold at below-market prices to first-time homebuyers.
