Yan Tun Kong Study Hall

Yan Tun Kong Study Hall is a traditional Chinese building located along the Ping Shan Heritage Trail, featuring carved ancestral altars and decorative roof ridges. The structure displays architectural details typical of its period, with timber construction and carefully crafted interior elements.

The building was originally established to prepare students for Imperial Civil Service Examinations in China. It underwent major restoration work in 1870, as recorded by a wooden plaque preserved in the main hall.

The hall remains a gathering place where the Tang clan family maintains traditional practices and ceremonies tied to their ancestors. Local families continue to use it as a center for their community customs and observances.

The hall is accessible on most days of the week, though certain dates require checking before a visit. Arrive in the afternoon for better light, as mornings can be dimmer inside the traditional structure.

The building transitioned from exam preparation to serving primarily as a community space after a modern school opened nearby in the 1930s. This shift reflects how the hall adapted to changing educational needs while maintaining its role as a family gathering place.
