Panda Hotel, building in Panda Hotel, China
Panda Hotel is a high-rise building in Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong, combining hotel accommodation with a multi-floor retail and dining complex called Panda Place. The tower has large windows along its facade and a practical layout that separates the hotel floors from the shopping and restaurant levels below.
The hotel opened in 1990, at a time when Tsuen Wan was growing from an industrial town into a dense residential district connected to the city by the new metro line. The retail section of the building changed hands and purpose more than once over the years, before the full redevelopment completed in 2005.
The hotel takes its name from the giant panda, an animal that holds a special place in Chinese national identity and is often associated with friendship and diplomacy. The shopping floors inside draw a mix of local residents and visitors, giving the place a rhythm that feels more neighborhood than tourist.
The building sits close to two MTR stations on the Tsuen Wan line, making the rest of Hong Kong easy to reach without a car. The surrounding streets have markets, food stalls, and shops that stay open late into the evening.
The retail floors now known as Panda Place were once occupied by Yaohan, a Japanese department store chain that was among the largest retailers in Asia before it collapsed during the 1997 financial crisis. The space stayed empty for several years before the site was rebuilt and reopened in its current form.
