Dafengmilu National Natural Reserve

Dafengmilu National Natural Reserve is a coastal protected area in Jiangsu Province featuring extensive wetlands, mudflats, and salt marshes along the Yellow Sea. The site includes observation points and learning centers where visitors can explore wetland ecology and observe the diverse wildlife that inhabits this environment.

The reserve was established in 1986 when 36 deer from British zoos were reintroduced to their native habitat in China. This groundbreaking project marked a turning point in international conservation efforts for this species.

This protected area serves as a symbol of wildlife restoration and environmental recovery in China. Walking through the wetlands, visitors witness a thriving deer population that represents decades of dedicated conservation efforts.

The area is best explored during tidal shifts when the wetlands reveal different features and wildlife behavior. Comfortable walking shoes and binoculars are useful, since observation points are often reached on foot.

The deer population that began with just 36 animals in 1986 grew into a thriving community of hundreds of individuals. This demonstrates how rapidly a species can recover when returned to its original environment.
