Gaoligongshan National Nature Reserve, Protected nature reserve in western Yunnan, China
The reserve encompasses 4,055 square kilometers of mountains and valleys, stretching from 700 meters to 3,916 meters in altitude with diverse forest ecosystems.
The Southern Silk Road, crossing through the reserve's southern section, connected India, Afghanistan, and Pakistan with central China since the 4th century BC.
Eight hamlets near the reserve contain 450 families from diverse ethnic groups including Han, Bai, Lisu, Yi, Hui, and Dai populations.
The reserve features different access zones, with the highest areas designated as restricted core zones except along the Southern Silk Road path.
The forest belt creates natural pathways allowing species from the Himalayas, Palearctic region, and Southeast Asia to mix in this exceptional environment.
