Gaoligongshan National Nature Reserve

Gaoligongshan National Nature Reserve is a large protected area of mountains and valleys spanning multiple elevation zones. The different altitudes support distinct forest types, creating a complex ecosystem across the entire landscape.

An ancient trade route known as the Southern Silk Road once crossed the southern section, linking India, Afghanistan, and Pakistan with central China for many centuries. This pathway shaped economic and cultural connections across the region for generations.

Small villages surrounding the reserve are home to Han, Bai, Lisu, Yi, Hui, and Dai communities who have lived in these valleys for generations. Their presence shapes the character of daily life in the foothills and surrounding areas.

The reserve divides into different zones with varying access rules to protect the natural areas. Visitors should check which sections are open and what regulations apply before planning a visit.

The reserve acts as a bridge where species from the Himalayas, northern temperate regions, and Southeast Asia meet in one place. This rare convergence of different animal populations happens because of the varied elevations and forest types.
