Cheung Wah Estate, Public housing estate in Fanling, Hong Kong.
Cheung Wah Estate is a public housing complex in Fanling with ten residential blocks containing 5,120 apartments spread across the site. The buildings feature architectural styles from the 1980s, with landscaped areas, play zones, and pathways that link the different blocks together.
The complex was built between 1984 and 1986 as part of Hong Kong's public housing program. In 2004 it joined the Tenants Purchase Scheme Phase 6A, allowing residents the option to buy their units.
The estate reflects how Hong Kong residents have adapted to close urban living, with families of different ages sharing courtyards and ground-level spaces. Daily life centers on small shops, markets, and gathering spots where neighbors naturally meet.
The estate has parks, play areas, schools, and bus stops nearby, making it easy to navigate and connect to other parts of the city. Local shops, food markets, and eating places are within walking distance for daily needs.
The estate blends two different housing models—some residents own their units through the purchase scheme while others rent—creating a mixed community that has lived together over decades. This dual arrangement is one of Hong Kong's innovative approaches to making housing accessible across income levels.
