Tsz Tak Study Hall

Tsz Tak Study Hall is a traditional Chinese building with rooms arranged around a central courtyard in Fanling Wai, North District. The structure shows how learning spaces were organized in the 19th century, with the courtyard serving as the heart of the complex.

The building was established in 1846 to prepare students for Chinese imperial civil service exams under the Qing Dynasty. After British authority took control of the New Territories in 1898, it became one of the first schools offering English-language instruction to local students.

The study hall served as a gathering place where local families celebrated festivals and held important ceremonies together. Walking through the rooms, you can sense how the community used this space for more than just learning.

Plan your visit during daytime hours, keeping in mind that the building closes for a lunch break midday. Tuesday is the only day the building remains closed, so schedule your trip for any other day of the week.

The building bridges two educational traditions by teaching both Chinese and British curricula after 1898. This blend makes it a living record of how Hong Kong's society shifted during the transition from Qing to colonial rule.
