Chongsheng Temple

Chongsheng Temple is a complex situated near Dali's old town at the base of the Cangshan Mountains, with the Three Pagodas as its most recognizable feature. The site contains multiple halls and structures arranged across its grounds, displaying the scale of religious architecture from centuries past.

The temple was founded in the 9th century and served as the royal temple of the Dali Kingdom with close ties to its rulers. Over time, it accumulated many religious artworks that reflected its importance to the kingdom's spiritual and political life.

The temple served as a major center for Buddhist practice and spiritual life in the region for many centuries. Visitors can see how deeply the religion shaped the lives and choices of the ruling families who came here.

Plan to spend several hours exploring the temple grounds as the buildings and pagodas are spread across a wide area. Visit early in the morning or in the late afternoon for better lighting and a more peaceful experience.

During restoration work in the late 1970s, workers discovered hundreds of Buddhist artifacts hidden inside one of the pagodas, including precious sculptures made of gold, silver, and crystal. These finds revealed the craftsmanship and wealth that once filled this sacred site.
