Jinxianmen Gate Tower, building in Guangdong Province, China
Jinxianmen Gate Tower is a city gate in Rongcheng District standing on Huancheng Road and reaching about 17 meters high, built primarily of fir wood with traditional design elements. The structure features a curved roof typical of old Chinese architecture and displays sturdy stone and wooden components that show the craftsmanship of builders from the early 1600s.
The gate was built in 1621 during the Ming Dynasty under Emperor Tianqi as part of Jieyang's five-gate system, positioned between the eastern and northern entrances. It received protection at the local level in 1993 and was later included in Guangdong Province's cultural heritage initiatives in 2015.
The gate's name means 'admitting the wise' and reflects the historical value placed on knowledge and learning in the community. Local people view it as a symbol of the city's identity and cultural continuity through time.
The gate is accessible during daylight hours and offers an easy opportunity for visitors to explore local history. The location is clearly marked on maps and remains an easily recognizable landmark in central Rongcheng District.
In August 2023, a car accident damaged the supporting wall of the gate, but the main structure remained unharmed and was repaired afterward. At night, the tower is illuminated, highlighting its shape and giving it a distinctive appearance after dark.
