China Construction Bank Centre, Financial skyscraper in Central, Hong Kong.
The China Construction Bank Centre is a skyscraper in Hong Kong that rises 367 meters and spans 72 floors with a glass facade featuring triangular steel frameworks. Four powerful corner columns support the entire structure, allowing spacious open floor plans without interior support pillars.
The project began in April 1985 and was completed in 1990, becoming the first building outside the United States to surpass 305 meters in height. Its completion marked a turning point in Hong Kong's modern architectural development.
The building's design by I.M. Pei incorporates architectural elements that required modifications to address traditional feng shui principles before final construction.
The building is easily accessible in Central Hong Kong with its main entrance on a busy street with good transportation connections. Keep in mind that only certain public areas are open to visitors, as it functions as a private office building.
The building transitions from a quadrilateral base to a triangular form at the top, with this geometric change strategically distributing vertical stress to the four corners. This refined structural approach was necessary to maintain stability at extreme height and became a defining design principle.
