Wah Ha Estate, Public rental housing in Chai Wan, Hong Kong
Wah Ha Estate is a five-story residential complex in Chai Wan with around 187 rental apartments, originally an industrial building from 1959. The ground floor holds shops and offices, while the upper levels provide living spaces throughout.
The building began as a factory in 1959 and was converted to housing in 2016, keeping roughly 70 percent of its original structure. This transformation marked the shift away from Chai Wan's manufacturing heritage toward its modern mixed-use identity.
Exhibition spaces inside display objects from the site's transformation, helping residents connect with the area's industrial past. You can see how factory work once defined this neighborhood and shaped its character.
The site uses natural ventilation, rainwater collection, and green roofs to save energy and keep residents comfortable. These environmental features make it a pleasant place to walk through and experience the living conditions.
This is the last remaining H-shaped factory structure in Hong Kong, now housing residents. The H-shape was once a typical design feature for factories from that era, and this building preserves this rare architectural memory.
