Steinwerder, Industrial port district in Hamburg, Germany
Steinwerder is a port district on the southern bank of the Elbe that stretches across several kilometers. Here you find large container terminals, shipyards, and various maritime facilities that shape the daily operations of Hamburg's harbor.
The area was originally an island in the Elbe, but was raised and attached to the mainland after the Great Fire of 1842 using debris from the city. Since then it has grown into Hamburg's most important port and industrial zone.
The district houses the Container Terminal Tollerort and the Cruise Center Steinwerder, which process thousands of international visitors and cargo daily.
The area is accessible via the Old Elbe Tunnel or Köhlbrand Bridge, which connect it to other parts of Hamburg. Keep in mind that this is primarily a working port with limited public access to most facilities.
Despite being Hamburg's largest industrial port zone, this area has almost no permanent residents. The sparse population stands in stark contrast to the massive terminal facilities and constant shipping activity.
