Aurich, Administrative district in Lower Saxony, Germany

Aurich is an administrative district on the North Sea coast in East Frisia. The region encompasses both mainland areas and inhabited islands, featuring a mix of coastal marshes, dikes, and tidal flats.

The district was established in 1977 when the former districts of Aurich and Norden merged, reorganizing the administrative structure of East Frisia. This consolidation created a larger unified administrative region for the entire area.

The district's coat of arms displays a virgin eagle, representing medieval chieftains, along with six-pointed spurs for Norden and acorns symbolizing Aurich city.

The area is best explored on foot or by bicycle, particularly across the mainland and through smaller towns. Regular ferry services connect the islands to the mainland, making it possible to visit the different island communities.

Large sections of the district fall within the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park, where tides reshape the landscape daily. This dynamic environment means visitors encounter a constantly changing natural setting depending on when they arrive.
