Anhalt-Zerbst, Historic administrative district in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany
Anhalt-Zerbst is a district in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt, centered on the town of Zerbst and covering a wide area of smaller towns and villages. The Elbe river runs through part of the territory, shaping a mostly flat landscape with patches of forest and farmland.
The Principality of Anhalt-Zerbst was established in the medieval period as part of the House of Anhalt and remained an independent territory until the late 18th century. The modern administrative district was formed in 2007 through a regional reform that merged several older districts.
Zerbst, the former capital of the principality, still has several churches and old buildings that reflect its time as a royal seat. In the smaller towns around the district, local markets and village festivals bring together regional food and crafts throughout the year.
The district lies between Berlin and Leipzig and is easy to reach by train, with Zerbst serving as the main starting point for getting around. A car is useful for visiting the more remote villages and the areas along the Elbe.
Sophie Auguste Friederike of Anhalt-Zerbst, who grew up in Zerbst, went on to become Catherine the Great, one of the most powerful rulers in Russian history. A statue in Zerbst honors her today, and the town has kept ties with Russia because of this connection.
