Bad Doberan, Spa town in Rostock district, Germany
Bad Doberan is a spa town in the Rostock district of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, set among beech forests and gentle hills. Streets wind through neighborhoods with neoclassical houses and broad avenues that stretch from the center to the minster.
A Cistercian abbey founded in 1171 formed the settlement's origin, later becoming a summer residence for Mecklenburg dukes. During the 19th century the town grew into a fashionable spa resort that drew guests from across Europe.
The spa pavilion from 1804 still serves as a social hub where concerts and events draw local crowds throughout the year. Tree-lined promenades invite walkers to stroll between classical buildings and open lawns.
The historic narrow-gauge railway Molli runs regular services and links the town with the Baltic coast a few kilometers away. Many paths can be explored on foot while marked trails lead through the surrounding countryside.
The horse market in July ranks among the region's oldest folk festivals and draws breeders and onlookers from surrounding villages. During the event horse-drawn carriages parade through the center and traders display their wares on the square before the minster.
