Herz Jesu, Catholic church in Aachen-Mitte, Germany
Herz Jesu is a neo-Romanesque brick church in Aachen featuring a sandstone facade and a prominent tower rising above the roofline. The building contains a main nave with side aisles and houses a large mosaic in its interior depicting religious scenes.
Construction began in 1908 under architect Josef Kleesattel's plans and the church was consecrated in 1910. This made it one of the first major new church buildings of the early 20th century in the Aachen area.
The church serves as a spiritual focal point for the Frankenberg neighborhood and remains active in community life today. Its name refers to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a core theme of Catholic devotion that shapes both its design and interior elements.
The church is centrally located in the district and easily accessible on foot from downtown. Visitors can enter during services and scheduled opening times to view the interior spaces.
The original architectural design required the building to be rotated 90 degrees so the altar would face east. This adaptation solved a constraint imposed by the site boundaries.
