Wilde Schneeburg, Oberried

Wilde Schneeburg, Oberried, Medieval castle ruins in Oberried, Germany

Description

Wilde Schneeburg comprises castle ruins situated on a mountainside in the Black Forest region that once served as a fortified stronghold of medieval rulers. The site rests at roughly 860 meters elevation on the western slope of Hochfarn mountain, where a stone residential tower was once constructed.

History

The fortification first appeared in records in 1302 and was destroyed by Freiburg forces in 1314 during regional conflicts. Despite its brief existence, it played a role in the power struggles of the medieval period between competing cities and territorial lords.

Culture

The name itself reflects the wild and untamed nature of its medieval past. Visitors encounter today a landscape shaped by that distant history, where the location speaks to its former importance more than any standing structure.

Practical

Access to the site runs via hiking trails through the Black Forest from Oberried, passing through forested terrain that requires appropriate footwear. The elevation of about 860 meters means visitors should expect a moderate climb with some exertion.

Did you know?

Scattered ceramic fragments and stone masonry lie among the rubble, offering clues about the former residential tower that once stood here. These archaeological traces allow visitors to imagine life in this fortress even though no walls have survived.
