Büchel Air Base, Military air base in Büchel, Germany
Büchel Air Base is a military airfield operated by the German Air Force in Büchel, a community in the Eifel hills near Cochem. The site hosts 46 Panavia Tornado fighter jets and provides workspace and housing for roughly 2000 personnel, including service members from two nations and civilian staff.
The airfield opened in 1955 as part of West Germany's rearmament during the Cold War and quickly became an important NATO location. After the East-West divide ended, its mission evolved, but the military function and transatlantic alliance role continued.
Personnel from Germany and the United States work side by side here, sharing workspace and support areas while maintaining separate living quarters. This daily contact between service members of both nations reflects decades of alliance ties and coordinated defense planning.
Access is restricted to authorized personnel only, and no civilian tours are permitted. Visitors traveling near the area can see runways and a few buildings from the outside but must respect security zones and stay clear of the perimeter.
Beneath the airfield lie storage bunkers for B61 nuclear weapons, which can be armed only after dual release by German and American authorities. This nuclear sharing arrangement is a special feature within NATO and has stirred public debate for decades.
