Bundesbank bunker

The Bundesbank bunker is an underground facility beneath the hills of Cochem containing multiple secure vaults and control rooms spread across different levels. The installation was designed to store large quantities of banknotes and protect them in case of emergency.

The facility was built in 1964 to protect West Germany from economic collapse during the Cold War. It stored a complete emergency system with alternative banknotes that was ready for immediate use at any time.

The bunker shows how West Germany wanted to protect itself from economic crisis and reflects the fears of that era. Visitors can see today how security was organized and what role money played during the Cold War.

Visitors can explore the facility only with a guide who explains what you are seeing and how everything functioned. The best time to visit is from May to October, when regular tours are organized.

The bunker was equipped with a special climate control system that maintained constant temperature and humidity to preserve the stored banknotes. This technology was necessary to ensure that the money remained in perfect condition over long periods.
