Frankfurt Airport long-distance station, Long-distance railway station at Frankfurt Airport, Germany
This station is an underground hub with four tracks and two island platforms that sit beneath arched glass roofs. The hall runs several hundred meters and links through corridors to Terminal 1.
The facility opened in May 1999 when the new high-speed line between Cologne and the Rhine-Main area began service. Construction created the first direct high-speed connection between the airport and major cities to the west.
The name Fernbahnhof sets this hall apart from the nearby regional station and shows its role as a transfer point between air travel and train connections. Travelers use the space daily to move between international flights and destinations across Germany, Austria, Switzerland or the Netherlands.
The platforms sit underground and you reach them by lifts and escalators from the terminal areas. Signs guide travelers through several levels and a short walk takes them to check-in or baggage claim.
The hall serves only long-distance trains and handles no regional connections, which makes it a rarity in Germany. Despite sitting underground, the glass roofs bring daylight down to the platforms.
