Altenau, Climatic health resort in Lower Saxony, Germany.
Located at an elevation of 513 meters, Altenau spreads across mountain valleys along the Oker River in the Oberharz region of Lower Saxony.
Founded in the 13th century, Altenau developed as a mining town until the closure of iron and silver works in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The wooden St. Nikolai Church, constructed in 1670, stands in the market square where the Altenau stream joins the Oker River.
The Tourist Information center on Hüttenstr. 9 provides details about hiking trails, outdoor activities, and local attractions in the Upper Harz Mountains.
The Schultal valley contains Europe's largest herb park, featuring numerous plant species near the town center.
