Argen, River and stream in Baden-Württemberg, Germany
The Argen is a river in Baden-Württemberg formed by two branches, the Upper Argen and the Lower Argen, which join and flow into Lake Constance. The lower section of the river runs through open farmland and wooded stretches, and the area near its mouth is shaped by side channels and floodplain terrain.
From around the 8th century, the river formed the backbone of the Argengau, a medieval county that took its name directly from the water. That territorial role shaped how towns and estates were organized along its banks for several centuries.
The name Argen likely comes from a pre-Roman word for water, a reminder of how long people have lived along its banks. Today, the river corridor is a place where locals walk, cycle, and spend time outdoors, especially near the mouth where the water meets Lake Constance.
The area around the river mouth is easy to reach by car and has parking nearby. If you plan to walk along the banks, wear sturdy shoes since some paths can get muddy after rain.
Just before reaching Lake Constance, the river forms a floodplain forest and wetland of around 300 hectares, one of the few remaining natural river mouths along the lake. The mix of open water and dense riverside vegetation draws bird species that are rarely seen elsewhere in the region.
