Bremerhaven–Bederkesa railway line, Heritage railway line between Bremerhaven and Bad Bederkesa, Germany
The Bremerhaven-Bederkesa railway is a heritage railway in the Elbe-Weser region that connects the port city of Bremerhaven with the spa town of Bad Bederkesa. The line runs through nine stations across flat terrain between river delta and heath landscape.
The railway opened in 1896 and served passenger transport for more than 70 years before ending in 1968. Freight services continued afterward until the line closed completely in 1993 and was later revived as a heritage railway.
The route is maintained by railway enthusiasts who operate historic trains with vintage carriages that evoke early 20th century travel culture. Passengers experience a piece of regional heritage that reflects in every detail of the service.
The journey takes about one and a half hours through open landscapes with occasional stops in small villages. Visitors should expect basic amenities and slow speed that allows for leisurely observation of the surroundings.
The trains run with a locomotive from 1943 that was originally designed for wartime service during World War Two. This diesel locomotive V36 134 is one of the few still operational examples of its class and demonstrates engineering from that historical period.
