Holzurburg am Bederkesaer See is a large protected area featuring forests, wetlands, and open water in Lower Saxony. The landscape shows birch and pine woodlands on higher ground, wet areas with heather and cotton grass, and a lake maintained at steady water levels.
The Holzurburg was a fortification dating back over a thousand years, with remains still visible on the ridge today. The protected area was designated in 2007 following restoration efforts on land previously altered by forestry and peat extraction.
The name 'Holzurburg' comes from an ancient fortification that once stood on this ridge. Today, visitors experience how the site connects past settlement and defense with the quiet natural landscape that now surrounds it.
The area can be explored via two main walking trails: a forest path circles the woods for about four kilometers, while a lake circuit extends seven kilometers around the water. Small viewing towers provide sightlines across the water and surrounding landscape.
Water levels in the lake are actively managed through a small gate system to maintain stable conditions for plants and animals. This hidden infrastructure keeps wetland ecosystems thriving while remaining almost invisible to visitors.
