Bernkasteler Doctor, Premium vineyard in Bernkastel-Kues, Germany.
The Bernkasteler Doctor is a vineyard in Bernkastel-Kues on the Moselle River, known for its steep slopes of blue slate soil. Several wine estates each manage their own section of the site, all growing Riesling grapes and producing their own version of the wine.
The vineyard received its name in 1636, when an archbishop from Trier praised the wine for its supposed healing effects. That story became part of the local identity and has shaped the reputation of this site ever since.
The name "Doctor" comes from a legend about an archbishop who is said to have recovered from illness after drinking this wine. Bottles from this site still carry an Art Nouveau label design that has stayed largely unchanged for generations.
The vineyard sits directly above the old town of Bernkastel-Kues and is easy to reach on foot from there. The slopes are very steep, so wearing sturdy shoes is a good idea if you want to walk close to the vines.
The Bernkasteler Doctor is one of the smallest named vineyard sites in Germany, which means only a very limited amount of wine is produced each year. This scarcity makes bottles from this site hard to find and sought after by collectors.
