Bilstein

Bilstein is a mountain in Schwalm-Eder-Kreis that rises to about 460 meters and belongs to the Langenbergen range. The slopes display natural rock formations and offer views across the Hesse landscape.

The Bilstein formation began about 16 to 18 million years ago, when magma pushed through cracks in existing rock layers. This volcanic process shaped the region's geology over time.

The mountain is recognized as a cultural monument and shapes the regional landscape with its distinctive form. Locals and visitors appreciate it as a landmark of the Schwalm-Eder area.

Marked hiking trails lead from the village of Nentershausen up to the summit and are accessible for most walkers. Parking and rest areas are available at the base of the mountain.

The basalt rocks stand nearly vertical and are made of basanite, a rare volcanic stone that creates distinctive patterns in the rock face. This unusual geometry makes the mountain geologically notable.
